How to Care For and Store a Vintage Designer Handbag
August 17, 2026
A well-made handbag is built to last decades, but how it's stored and handled day to day makes a real difference to how it ages. A few habits go a long way.
Stuff it before you store it
An empty bag left standing on its own can crease, sag, or lose its shape over time. Stuff it loosely with acid-free tissue paper or a soft cloth (avoid newspaper — the ink can transfer) before putting it away, especially for longer-term storage.
Keep it out of direct light
Sunlight and even strong indoor lighting can fade leather and canvas unevenly over time. Store bags in a closet or dust bag away from windows, and avoid leaving a bag on display in direct sun for extended periods.
Let leather breathe
Plastic storage bags trap moisture and can encourage mildew or cause leather to dry out and crack — a breathable dust bag or a soft cotton pillowcase is a much better choice for anything leather, suede, or canvas.
Store it upright, not stacked
Stacking bags on top of each other, or storing them lying flat under other items, puts uneven pressure on the structure and hardware. Where possible, store bags upright, with enough space that they're not squashed against their neighbors.
Handle vachetta and untreated leather carefully
Natural, untreated leather trim (common on classic Louis Vuitton and similar pieces) marks easily from ink, dye transfer from clothing, and moisture. It's meant to develop a patina over time, but it's worth keeping it away from direct water and dark fabrics that could transfer color, especially in the first few months of wear.
Clean gently, and sparingly
Most everyday marks can be addressed with a soft, dry cloth. For anything beyond light surface dust, it's worth having leather professionally cleaned and conditioned rather than using household cleaning products, which can strip finishes or discolor certain leathers.
Rotate what you carry
Using the same bag every single day accelerates wear on handles, corners, and hardware. Rotating between a few pieces — even just two or three — meaningfully extends how long each one looks its best.
When you're ready to sell
Well-cared-for bags hold their value noticeably better on the resale market. If you're ever ready to part with a piece, keeping the original box, dust bag, and any authenticity cards or receipts alongside good storage habits makes a real difference to both condition and resale price.
